What is Initial Driver CPC?
Â
The Initial Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (Driver CPC) is a qualification required for anyone who wants to drive a lorry professionally in the UK. It ensures that new HGV drivers have the knowledge and practical ability needed to operate large vehicles safely and professionally.
Â
The qualification focuses on:
Â
-
Road safety and hazard awareness
-
Vehicle checks and safe driving practices
-
Load security and vehicle regulations
-
Professional driver responsibilities
-
Real-world driving scenarios
Â
Once completed, drivers receive their Driver Qualification Card (DQC) which legally allows them to work as a professional HGV driver.
Â
To gain the Initial Driver CPC, drivers must complete two additional modules alongside their HGV licence tests:
Â
Module 2 – Case Studies (Theory Test)
This is a computer-based test that presents real-life scenarios professional drivers may encounter. Candidates answer multiple-choice questions based on safety, regulations, and best driving practices.
Â
Module 4 – Practical Demonstration Test
This is a practical assessment where the driver demonstrates knowledge of vehicle safety and professional procedures, such as:
Â
-
Daily walk-around vehicle checks
-
Load safety and weight distribution
-
Emergency procedures and driver safety
